JEF
international seminar in Tarxien, Malta
| 17-23 March 2010
“The
ultimate solution for a better life: (im)migration?”
is an international seminar organised by JEF-Europe and JEF-Malta in
Tarxien, a small village in the south east of Malta from 17 until 23
October 2010.
When
speaking about immigration it is important to make the distinction
between legal and illegal immigrants. Despite the obvious difference
in their legal status, immigrants in both categories often feel
unwelcome and excluded from their host societies, which is closely
linked to xenophobic attitudes widespread across Europe and openly
manifested especially in recent years, but also the lack of adequate
policies and assistance of governmental institutions in host
countries.

At home in Europe Citizen-reporters open to the European civil society Through their video reportages shot in 10 EU-countries, the project “Citizen-reporter” puts a number of students in the spotlight. In the spirit of a true European ambassador, the Erasmus student becomes a citizen-reporter. In every city where the Erasmus students live and study, they go off to discover people, projects and various actions constructing European society. The students are our eyes and ears. Indeed, it is they who guide us into their personal perception of Europe. |

JEF's
EU-wide lobby action for a more flexible and user-friendly ECI
Regulation
Thanks to article 11(4) of the
Lisbon Treaty a first significant step has been taken by the EU in the
direction of participatory democracy as it will henceforth be possible
for
Citizens to bring their own legislative proposals to the table of EU
policy-makers!
The article situplates: "Not less than one million citizens who are
nationals of a significant number of Member States may take the
initiative of
inviting the European Commission, within the framework of its powers, to
submit
any appropriate proposal on matters where citizens consider that a legal
act of
the Union is required for the purpose of implementing the Treaties."
Yet,
the European Institutions still need to agree on a Regulation that
determines
the technical criteria by which the European Citizens' Initiative
(ECI)
would be made operational so that Citizens could start collecting
signatures
for proposals which they would like to put forward. The European
Commission
launched a consultation in 2009 to which JEF-
Europe replied stating the wishes of JEF members and sections who
gave
their input.

Report on the EU Citizens' rights conference The conference entitled EU citizens' rights: the way forward took place in Brussels on 1-2 July 2010 and JEF-Europe was there to have its say thanks to outgoing Secretary-General, Peter Matjašič and Vice-President, Pauline Gessant. Since JEF contributed to the public consultation launched by the European Commission (EC) “EU citizens’ rights: the way forward. How to strengthen the rights stemming from the European Union citizenship”, we were invited to take part in this two days conference aimed at assessing the concrete obstacles Union citizens face in their daily lives and to identify possible solutions to remove these obstacles. |

Only an EU wide constituency guarantees truly ‘European’ parliamentary elections
One year after the European Parliament (EP) elections, the Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe), the European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) and the Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) want to remind of the necessity of reforming the electoral system in order to bring the EU closer to the citizens and reverse the worrying trend towards ever lower voter turnout.
All three organisations therefore welcome the proposal included in the Duff Report of having additional MEPs who will be elected by a single constituency formed of the whole territory of the European Union and transnational lists that will be composed of candidates drawn from at least one third of the States.
“Any initiatives aiming at creating a genuinely European public sphere and a more European mindset among the MEPs are extremely important for European democracy, as national priorities still too often dominate the election campaign.” explains JEF-Europe President Philippe Adriaenssens.
