Statement: Don’t sell out – Ukrainian territorial integrity is non-negotiable!

Brussels, 16.08.2025

  • Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met yesterday in Alaska to discuss a potential ceasefire in Ukraine without any European or Ukrainian representatives present
  • However Trump consulted with European leaders prior to this meeting
  • Ukrainian President Zelenskyj had firmly rejected this suggestions of a proposed landswap beforehand while the European Commission reaffirmed its commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty
  • JEF Europe calls on all pro-Ukrainian member states and the EU, to stand firm on the side of Ukrainian territorial integrity without neither recognizing Russian sovereignty over occupied territories nor a so called ‘land swap’

Yesterday, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held a bilateral meeting in Alaska to discuss conditions for a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. Neither Ukrainian representatives nor members of the EU were present. However, Trump had met with European leaders beforehand.

As indicated in statements leading up to the meeting, the proposed truce would freeze the conflict along the lines in Kherson and Zaporizhia, while allowing Russia to retain control of the Donbass. This arrangement would effectively dismantle Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

JEF Europe reaffirms its support for Ukraine and its territorial integrity, and therefore rejects the idea of such land swaps, as they would reward Russia’s unlawful invasion. We call on the European Commission to stand firm in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and to ensure that Europe speaks with one voice in these negotiations. We implore that Ukraine must not be betrayed!

One thing is certain: there can be no peace in Ukraine without Ukraine!
