Call for Applications: Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board for the The New Federalist

Join our TNF team as Editor-in-Chief or member of the Editorial Board!

The New Federalist is seeking two new Editors-in-Chief to manage the editorial team, content and strategy of the webzine for the next 1+1 years.

Joining The New Federalist is an opportunity to co-lead a prestigious publication, which has for almost 20 years been a prominent online youth-led source of information on European Union affairs.

What is The New Federalist?

The New Federalist is the English-language edition of the multilingual web magazine whose parent organisation is the Young European Federalists (JEF Europe). The other language editions are French, German, Italian, Spanish, Romanian and Polish. Taken together, articles on the language editions are read over 200,000 times each month.

The New Federalist covers EU politics and European affairs, with a federalist angle!

Your role and mandate as Editor-in-Chief

We are looking for one Senior and one Junior Editor-in-Chief. The mandate is for 12 months, and can be extended by another 12 months upon mutual agreement between JEF Europe and the Editor-in-Chief.

Both positions are voluntary, and require a time commitment of around 10 hours per week.

As an Editor-in-Chief, you will have the chance to develop editorial projects for a pan-European magazine during the 2024 European election period and beyond. Through your work, you will contribute to a European-wide public debate on common European issues.

Your tasks as Editor-in-Chief

– Recruiting an editorial team to manage the different sections, social media and outreach

– Overseeing a team of translators, and recruiting new members of the team

– Editing and reviewing articles for publication, including translations of articles featuring in the sister editions

– Developing a strategy for the magazine’s content and outreach, including for the 2024 European Parliament elections period

– Working closely with the sister editions and JEF Europe to organise joint projects

– Organising (and possibly hosting) webinars in cooperation with the sister editions and/or JEF Europe

– Organising and chairing meetings to coordinate the efforts of the editorial team

– Organising features on topics which are of special importance or special interest to our target readership

Requirements for the post of Editor-in-Chief

– Native or native-level English speaker with strong writing and editing skills

– Strong interest in EU politics and a good understanding of EU institutions and processes

– An eye for what makes a good, readable, and relevant article

– A creative approach to broadening the readership and developing the strategy of the webzine

– Ability to bring people on board, lead a team and help team members work together

– Knowledge of JEF Europe’s aims and activities, including an understanding of European federalism, is a clear advantage.

Member of the Board of Editors

In this role, you will assist the editors in Chief in their day-to-day editorial duties and manage a team depending on your preferences (for example regional writers or translators) and projects and campaigns (such as DUP, section collaboration, social media, and statutory event coverage).

Experience useful for this role writing experience and interest in journalism and editing required, as well as very good English. Time commitment  for this position is approximately 2 hours per week.
