On Tuesday, 27 October 2026, JEF Europe and the Union of European Federalists (UEF) will organise a Brussels presentation of How Europe Survives: The Adaptability and Resilience of a Continent in Peril, hosted at the offices of the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS). The event will present the new Oxford University Press book by Catherine E. De Vries, Professor of Political Science and Vice Dean at IE University, and Alexandros Kentikelenis, Professor of Political Economy and Sociology at Bocconi University.
Moving from the eurozone crisis and Brexit to the pandemic and war on Europe’s borders, the book asks why the European project continues to endure. The authors argue that Europe’s apparent messiness -its capacity to improvise, absorb tensions and adapt institutions- is part of its strength, while examining the democratic and social costs of governing through a permanent crisis.
The event will bring the two authors into conversation with Domènec Ruiz Devesa, President of the Union of European Federalists (UEF) and former Member of the European Parliament, and László Andor, Secretary General of FEPS and former European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. Together, they will explore whether Europe’s adaptability can be converted into stronger democratic legitimacy, a renewed social contract, greater geopolitical capacity and a more united and resilient Union.
The public programme is scheduled for 17:00–18:30, followed by a reception, book signing and interview opportunities. Journalists may register their interest in author interviews, review opportunities or potential op-ed contributions.
If you have questions or input for the event, do not hesitate to reach out to Christos Papagiannis.
