JEF Europe joins the Article 109 coalition for a renewed UN charter

The Young European Federalists (JEF Europe) have joined the Article 109 Coalition, a growing global alliance of civil society organisations advocating for a review and renewal of the United Nations Charter.
At a time when the world faces armed conflicts, global democratic backsliding, a worsening climate crisis and growing geopolitical tensions, we believe that global institutions must be equipped to respond effectively and democratically. The UN Charter, drafted in 1945, has provided the foundation for international cooperation for over 80 years. Yet many of today’s challenges require reforms that reflect contemporary realities and strengthen the ability of the international community to act collectively.
The Article 109 Coalition works to mobilise UN Member States to convene a General Conference for the review of the UN Charter, as foreseen in Article 109 of the Charter itself. The coalition brings together nearly 100 civil society organisations from across the world, including peacebuilding organisations, youth organisations, think tanks, democracy advocates, and former political leaders committed to renewing multilateralism.
As an organisation advocating for democratic governance beyond the nation state, JEF Europe has long supported the development of stronger and more accountable global institutions. We share the coalition’s vision of a reformed United Nations that is better able to maintain peace and security, protect human rights, address emerging global challenges, ensure more equitable representation of states, and create meaningful channels for the participation of civil society.
Our participation in the coalition reflects our broader commitment to global federalism and effective international cooperation. The challenges of the 21st century do not stop at borders, and neither should our democratic solutions.
Together with our partners in the Article 109 Coalition, we look forward to contributing to the debate on how global governance can be strengthened to meet the needs of present and future generations.
