Recently, reports have emerged that European members of NATO are considering another €70 billion military funding commitment for Ukraine, on top of a part of the €90 billion package recently approved. In parallel, as the EU restarts using the European Peace Facility to reimburse military aid, it is receiving claims totalling billions of Euros. 

 

Each military package represents a positive step by itself, but the patchwork of packages and financial facilities also represents a fundamental failure by the EU to create a long term institutional support mechanism for Ukraine, which stands at the frontline of the defence of European freedom and democracy from the imperialist Russian war machine. 

 

Each new military capability arrives too little and too late, following public squabbling which allows the Russians to prepare and react preemptively, limiting their effectiveness. Each delay, uncertainty, or national veto represents more Ukrainian heroes perishing unnecessarily on the battlefield, another village destroyed, another month of prolonged war. 

 

Ukraine deserves better and Europe can do better. It is time to provide Ukraine with what it needs to win, not merely survive. As the Ukrainian military, through innovation and huge efforts, regains the initiative in parts of the frontline and sharply increases the price of war for the Putin regime through its successful strike campaigns, it is time to double down on military and fiscal support and announce long term willingness and increased financial facilities for as long as it takes to help Ukraine emerge victorious. Only European strength will bring Russia to the discussion table, drop its unreasonable demands aiming at Ukraine’s capitulation, and end the war and bloodshed. Only such an outcome can deter Russia from continuing its hybrid war against Europe and prevent the next invasion. 

 

Europeans should stand together, for peace, democracy, and European unity.
