Join The New Federalist: Applications Open for Winter 2026

Are you passionate about European politics, federalism, and the future of Europe? Do you enjoy writing, debating ideas, or shaping political discussions? Then apply to become part of The New Federalist team!

Founded in 1972, The New Federalist (TNF) has been a platform for political debate, fresh perspectives, and federalist ideas for more than five decades. Originally launched as a print magazine, TNF moved online in 2005 and expanded into several language editions. Today, its English-language edition continues to contribute to discussions on European integration, democracy, and federalism in Europe and beyond.

As part of the JEF network, The New Federalist offers young people the opportunity to make their voices heard, develop their editorial skills, and contribute to an international community of writers and editors.

We are recruiting!

For Winter 2026, The New Federalist is looking for motivated volunteers to fill several positions:

  • Editor-in-Chief (Senior and Junior): Help shape the publication’s editorial direction, coordinate contributions, and strengthen its outreach.
  • Associate Editor (Fundraising): Support the publication’s development and expansion, particularly through fundraising and grant applications.
  • Section Writers: Contribute articles, analysis, and opinion pieces to one of our editorial sections: European Politics, European Society, Europe in the World, Authoritarianism Watch, or Thinking Federalist.

We particularly encourage applications from writers based in regions that have traditionally received less coverage.

Why join The New Federalist?

Joining TNF is an opportunity to gain practical experience in journalism, political communication, and editorial work while contributing to debates about Europe’s future.

Although all positions are voluntary and unpaid, team members benefit from editorial support, constructive feedback, opportunities to represent the publication at funded events, and the possibility of progressing into more senior roles. Contributors are also free to publish with other outlets.

No previous journalism or publishing experience is required! We welcome applicants who are passionate about federalist ideas, committed to producing engaging and thought-provoking content, and interested in current affairs and digital communication.

How to apply

To apply, complete the online application form and indicate which position or positions you would like to be considered for.

Applicants will be asked to submit a short personal statement (maximum 500 words) outlining their motivation and relevant experience, alongside a writing sample (maximum 1,000 words). The writing sample does not need to have been published previously, but should demonstrate your individual writing style rather than academic writing.

Application deadline: Sunday, 22 November 2026, at 23:59 CET.

Applicants for editorial positions can expect to hear back within two weeks of the deadline, while applicants for writing positions will be contacted within four weeks.

Apply now and join The New Federalist!
